Yào Rooftop Bar

Chinese-styled rooftop above Surawong Road with lantern glow, dim sum snacks, strong cocktails and views over old town and the CBD.

Yào Rooftop Bar is where Bangkok’s skyline meets a soft Shanghai daydream. Sitting on the top of Bangkok Marriott The Surawongse, it looks out over the low-rise tangle of old town on one side and the high-rise CBD on the other. Chinese-influenced décor, lanterns and dark woods give the terrace a warm, slightly theatrical feel, while the menu keeps things grounded with dim sum, Chinese-inspired snacks and cocktails that echo the bar’s Chinatown inspiration.

Shanghai mood over Surawong

The route up goes through Yào Restaurant first: a smart Chinese dining room on the 32nd floor with views over the city and private rooms tucked along the side. From there, stairs and lifts carry you to the rooftop itself, where the atmosphere shifts from restaurant to open-air bar.

The terrace is long and gently wrapped around the building. On one edge you see the old town area, temple roofs and a flatter skyline; on the other side, glass towers mark Silom and Sathorn, so you’re always aware of being between two Bangkoks at once. Chinese details—screens, red tones, lanterns—give the place a distinct identity without turning it into a theme park. It feels like a rooftop that has dressed up for the evening rather than a place built purely for photos.

The mood is generally relaxed. Hotel guests, couples and small groups settle into couches, snap a few skyline shots and then sink into that slow rooftop rhythm: a first drink, a shared snack, a bit of people-watching and another look at the view when the lights on the Chao Phraya side really start to stand out.

Chinese bites, skyline cocktails and dim sum at the bar

Yào’s food offering is split between the restaurant and the rooftop. Downstairs, the main dining room serves classic and contemporary Chinese dishes—Shanghainese and Cantonese leaning, with everything from dim sum to larger shared plates. Upstairs on the terrace, the menu simplifies into bar-friendly formats: baskets of dim sum, small plates and snacks that are easy to eat while you’re talking and moving around.

The drinks list carries the same idea into the glass. You’ll find signatures like Tropical Fizz, Butterfly Sky and a full range of Yào’s Signature G&T serves, plus Champagne, wine, beers and mocktails. Prices are in the mid- to upper range for a Marriott rooftop—cocktails around 350–550 THB—but feel reasonable for the setting and view.

Dress code is officially casual, but most guests naturally drift towards smart casual: shirts or blouses, long trousers or skirts, and closed shoes. Multiple guides mention avoiding beachwear and flip-flops; it’s an upscale venue, but not stiff. Kids are generally allowed earlier in the evening, with the vibe shifting more adult later at night.
